Non-Credit Career Pathway Course

With the Certified Medical Assistant program, you will learn the personal traits and professional capabilities required of an entry-level medical assistant. A Medical Assistant is a health professional that performs routine administrative and clinical tasks in a variety of offices and clinics of physicians and nurse practitioners, urgent care centers, hospitals, labs, insurance and billing companies, and government agencies. The Medical Assistant field is one of the most versatile health occupations in today's healthcare environment. Medical Assistants perform administrative tasks such as managing business affairs of the practice, scheduling appointments, medical reception, billing, and acts as a patient advocate and navigator. Medical Assistants also assist the provider in performing clinical skills of patient documentation, procedure preparation, diagnostic testing, collecting specimens, pharmacology management, and basic first aid. With this course you will learn the professional characteristics and knowledge required of a Medical Assistant.

BSC ensures you will receive training that develops all the necessary skills to perform a variety of tasks that achieve high quality patient care. Students will apply with the ND Board of Nursing for the Certified Medication Assistant (CMA III) license upon completion of the Certified Medical Assistant program.

Fall 2024 Dates
  • Online Theory (144 hours)
    • August 26 – March 9, 2025
  • Lab (five 8-hour days on the BSC Campus or BASC)
    • December 7, January 18, February 3, February 15, and March 1
  • Practicum (40 hours)
    • Practicum February 23 – March 1 or March 2 - 8

No new coursework released December 21 - January 12 during the holiday break. Lab dates are subject to minor adjustments and will be held on the BSC Campus or at the Bakken Area Skills Center. Students returning to BSC to earn a degree and who have completed this non-credit course may be eligible to receive college credit for prior learning. Students should inquire with their academic advisor to explore pursuing prior learning credit opportunities.

Registration Requirements
  • Complete a registration form (available at and submit it in person at Bismarck State College National Energy Center of Excellence, 1200 Schafer Street, Room 107 or online to
  • Remit a non-refundable $500 deposit to hold a seat either in person or by calling (701) 224-5600 (must accompany the registration form).
  • Upon receipt of the registration form and deposit, students will receive an email from detailing how to create an online account with CastleBranch to upload the proof of immunizations.
  • The remaining tuition, less the deposit, is due ten (10) business days prior to course start date.
  • Registration closes August 9.
Failure to complete registration requirements will delay access to the course.

Please Note:
This course is offered for college credit as well. To receive college credit for the Medical Assistant Program, for-credit students must be enrolled at BSC, which includes completing the BSC application form and a $35 application fee. Once approved, students must register for the following courses in Campus Connection:

  • AH 135/135L Medical Assistant II/Lab
  • AH 197 Practicum/Internship

Fees to take the course for college credit can be obtained by contacting BSC Student Finance at 224-5533 or by stopping by their office located on the first floor of Schafer Hall.

Tuition includes online access, books, and lab supplies.

Scrubs are required for lab practice and practicum rotation.
