Upon successful completion of the course and clinical experience, students will receive a Bismarck State College certificate of completion and students will be prepared for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) National Exam.
Students who successfully complete this course may be eligible for prior learning credit.
Class size is limited and students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. No seats will be held without payment in full.
Course Outcomes: Students will understand relative anatomy and physiology, blood composition, specimen types and coagulation factors. Students will perform basic procedures of manual phlebotomy techniques, drawing and handling specimens.
Course Commitment: Attendance is mandatory. Students must complete 40 hours of theory instruction: 20 hours self-paced, online of anatomy physiology and lab operations AND 20 hours of face-to-face lab practice. Next, students must complete 100 hours of clinical training at a clinical site (to be determined by the instructor) AND 100 unassisted successful blood collections. Upon completion, students will be eligible to sit for the ASCP National Exam.
Clinical Requirement: Students must pass a background check, drug test, and submit a current immunization record directly to CastleBranch. The fee paid directly to Castlebranch is $153.00.
This is a clinical prerequisite. Acceptable results must be received before the first day of clinical. Required immunizations include: MMR, Varicella, TB, and Seasonal Flu.
Before registering and paying for the course students must understand passing the background check and drug test is required as is submitting the required immunization records.
Students who begin the course and fail to meet any of the clinical requirements will not be eligible for a refund of the course fee. Students who have a prior record resulting in a hit on the background check must contact BSC Continuing Education at

Textbook and Dress Code: Textbooks are required for the first day of class and are NOT included in the tuition. Textbooks can be purchased at the BSC Bookstore. Book: BOC Phlebotomy Study Guide, ISBN-13: 978-0891896654.
Appropriate dress for a laboratory setting is mandatory. No shorts or skirts are allowed unless hose is worn. No open toed shoes. Socks or hose must be worn. Lab coats will be provided.

Refund Policy: To be eligible for a refund of the course fee, students must request the refund at least 3 business days prior to the start of the course. A $25.00 processing fee will be deducted from the amount refunded. No refunds will be issued after this time.
