Non-Credit Career Pathway Course

Bismarck State College's Continuing Education and TrainND provides 84-hour non-credit CMA II (Certified Medication Assistant) training allowing individuals the ability to deliver routine, regularly scheduled medication (as delegated by a licensed nurse) for individuals or groups of individuals with stable conditions which are administered on a routine basis and do not require determination of need, drug calculation, or dosage conversion. A CMA II can be employed in a setting where the licensed nurse is either scheduled regularly or not regularly including skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities and basic care facilities.

Students must hold a North Dakota CNA license prior to registering and must be in good standing with North Dakota Health and Human Services (NDHHS).

The program consists of 44 hours of classroom learning, eight hours of lab, and 32 hours of clinical. Classes are held each Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Students missing more than four hours of class time will be dropped out of the class regardless of the reason.

The CMA II course requires chapter exams after each subject is covered. Students will have two opportunities to pass each section before remediation is required, per the NDHHS. A passing score of 85% is required on all quizzes and the final exam. The final exam is included in the class tuition and students will have two attempts to pass the exam. Once all coursework and the final exam have been completed successfully, students will be eligible to apply for their CMA II license through the NDHHS. An application fee of $25 is payable at that time (credit card only).

Essential Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds during class, lab, and clinical practice.
  • Ability to participate in lab-based and clinical training, which may include extended periods of standing and limited opportunities for rest.
If a student has a temporary or permanent condition that limits their ability to meet these physical requirements, they should contact the Program Manager prior to the start of class. Attendance is mandatory and essential to the educational process.

Important Registration Information: Registration closes one week before the first day of class. Early registration is encouraged due to limited space.

Attendance Policy:
  • Students must attend on the first day of class, or they will be withdrawn.
  • No more than eight hours of total absence is permitted throughout the course.
Veteran Priority of Service:
This program is funded in part by the U.S. Department of Labor. In accordance with 20 CFR 1010, veterans and eligible spouses will receive priority of service over non-covered individuals.
