The Battle of the Little Big Horn or the Battle of Greasy Grass looms large in the American story. However, it was but one day out of a larger campaign that involved thousands of U.S. soldiers, Native men, women, and children, untold deprivations, huge swaths of contested land, and lasted months. The Custer episode is much overplayed. This class will provide students with a big picture of campaign strategies and blunders and Native engagement during the larger campaign of 1876.
