The Franklin Expedition: A Tragic Tale of Exploration and Mystery

ID : 32226
« back to classes page
While the US was embroiled in a Civil War, Sir John Franklin set out to find the North-West Passage. He took a crew and two ships—the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror. Both ships and over 100 men who crewed them were lost in the Arctic. In 2014 and 2016, the ships’ wrecks were discovered, but their discovery raised more questions than it answered.
Using the book Sir John Franklin’s Erebus and Terror Expedition: Lost and Found and Dan Simmons’ 2007 novel The Terror as a guide, we’ll discuss Franklin’s voyage, the recovery of the wrecks, and the tragic story’s continued presence in popular culture.
