Certificate:Heavy Equipment Operator

Non-Credit Career Pathway Course

The Heavy Equipment Operator Program is an industry-led program designed to prepare students to enter the construction industry as heavy equipment operators. Students will be introduced to various pieces of equipment, including (but not limited to): dozers, backhoes, utility tractors, excavators, skid steers, etc. Students will learn the essential operation of these pieces of equipment, including start-up and shutdown procedures, controls, uses, and basic maintenance techniques. Students will also be introduced to other valuable skills for a job sight, including basics surrounding safety, hand tools, first aid, and primary work-site considerations.

The HEO Program is comprised of the following courses:

  • Loader & Backhoe Operations
  • Construction Solutions & Communications

Registration Requirements: 
  1. Must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver's license.
  2. Be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to speak with the public, understand highway traffic signs and signals, respond to official inquiries, and make entries on reports and records.
  3. Complete the application form and submit it in-person at Bismarck State College National Energy Center of Excellence, 1200 Schafer Street, Room 107 or online to bsc.training@bismarckstate.edu.
  4. Remit a non-refundable $500 deposit to hold a seat in-person at Bismarck State College National Energy Center of Excellence, 1200 Schafer Street, Room 107 or over the phone at (701) 224-5600.
  5. Upon receipt of the application form and deposit, students will receive an email from bsc.training@bismarckstate.edu detailing how to obtain a drug screen within 10 business days of the course start date.

Special Notice: 
The course prerequisites, application, non-refundable deposit to hold a seat, and full tuition payment must be completed no later than ten (10) business days prior to the course start date.

Ensure you have appropriate clothing for the weather conditions including steel-toed boots (ankle high), light leather work gloves, safety glasses, coveralls (optional), and a notebook along with a pen/pencil.
