Non-Credit Career Pathway Course

Bismarck State College's Qualified Dental Assisting – Limited Radiology Registrant (QDA-LRR) to Qualified Dental Assistant (QDA) course is a comprehensive, self-paced curriculum building on existing radiology training by adding the remaining core components required by the North Dakota Board of Dental Examiners (NDBDE) to earn a full QDA certification. In this course students will complete the remaining two modules and complete 300 hours of clinical assisting demonstrating competency in the required skills.

This program is designed for those already affiliated with a dental office and those who have completed the QDA-LRR course. Eligibility for this course requires completion of the QDA-LRR course and employment and sponsorship by a dental office. A minimum age of 18 years old is required.

Course Outline:
Module 1: Infection Control (ICE)
  • Prevention of disease transmissions
  • Use of PPE and barriers
  • Instrument processing and sterilization
  • Disinfection protocols and surface management
  • OSHA and CDC compliance
  • Waste disposal and exposure control plans

Module 2: Anatomy, Morphology and Physiology (AMP)
  • Head, neck and oral cavity structures
  • Salivary glands, sinuses, and nerve pathways
  • Classification systems and anomalies
  • Skeletal and muscular systems
The course commitment includes didactic self-paced, online learning consisting of up to 96 hours and a 300-hour chairside experience requirement under the supervision of a licensed dentist. Completion of the didactic learning and chairside experience must be achieved within six months from the date of enrollment.

Assignments and submissions are graded on a pass/fail. A designated exam at the end of the course requires a competency-based grade. This exam must be passed with a score of 80% or higher. Comprehension and mastery of this material is critical to student success and patient safety.

Tuition includes online access only. The same book used for the Pathway III: QDA-LRR course will be used. Students may incur additional expenses based on clinic requirements. These may include scrubs, shoes, and lab jacket. Please verify with your clinic before purchasing.

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, students will receive a certificate of completion that may be used as documentation of having completed a board-approved equivalent course. This certificate can be submitted to the NDBDE when applying for licensure as a Qualified Dental Assistant (QDA) in the state of North Dakota.
